Travel & Holidays Discount Codes & Offers

Travel and holidays covers hotels, package holidays, flights, trains, coaches, car hire, airport parking and attractions. Each type of company prices in its own way. A tactic that saves money on a hotel room may do nothing for a train fare.

Travel prices move with demand rather than the retail calendar. Operators launch early-booking offers in autumn and January, then cut prices on unsold rooms and seats closer to the date. Booking sites and hotel chains reward members with lower rates. For trains, Railcards and advance fares save more than codes.

How to save on travel & holidays

  • Is the non-refundable rate worth it?

Non-refundable hotel and flight prices are cheaper, but they lock you in. If your plans might change, a slightly dearer flexible rate can save more than any code. Check the cancellation deadline and any change fees.

  • Get a Railcard before you book

A Railcard usually pays for itself within a couple of longer journeys. There are cards for young people, seniors, families, couples and disabled travellers, plus some regional ones. Split tickets can bring the fare down further.

  • Compare the final total

Booking fees, baggage, seat selection and resort fees often appear late in the checkout. Compare the final price across sites, not the first figure shown. Booking direct can sometimes remove a platform fee.

  • Sign in before you compare

Large booking sites show lower prices to logged-in members, and hotel chains often save their best direct rate for loyalty members. Some deals are only available in the app. Signing in first means you see the price you'd actually pay.

  • Set price alerts

Package holidays tend to be cheapest very early or at the last minute. Advance train fares usually go on sale about twelve weeks ahead. Price alerts save you checking the same dates over and over.

Travel & Holidays FAQs

Do discount codes work on flights?

Airlines rarely publish codes. You'll find them more often for package holidays, hotel booking sites and some coach operators, usually with a minimum spend or set dates.

Is it cheaper to book a hotel direct?

Sometimes. Hotels may beat booking sites with a direct rate, free breakfast or no booking fee. Check both before you pay.

Are last-minute holidays really cheaper?

Often, because operators would rather sell a room cheaply than leave it empty. The choice of dates and destinations is narrower, though. Check flight times and transfers, which can be less convenient.

When should I buy travel insurance?

Buy it as soon as you book, so you're covered if you have to cancel before you travel. Compare policies rather than taking the one offered at checkout.
